Renovated sustainably: Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee

In the past, grain was stored in order to be able to supply the whole of Schwerin with bread, today it smells of fresh rolls: The Hotel Speicher welcomes you in a former granary directly on the Ziegelsee. Behind the brick walls, a climate-positive 4-star wellness hotel awaits you.

Renovating Historical Monuments

The Hotel Speicher is located in a heritage-protected granary dating from 1939 and has a long and eventful history. At the end of the 1990s, it was extensively converted into a unique first-class hotel.

Sustainability played an important role throughout the renovation in the 1990s, as the Schwerin hotel had set itself the goal of actively taking responsibility for environmental protection and preserving the diversity of nature and scenic beauty of Mecklenburg.

From the initial planning phase, great importance was placed on maintaining the original character. The industrial warehouse is under monumental protection which naturally influenced the construction process. In addition, the reservoir with its 1.50 m thick concrete foundation is under water. A Casemate encloses the basement like a bathtub, helping to waterproof it, however, this was damaged by the considerable subsidence and changes in weight to the structure over time. During construction, water continued to leak in and made work in the basement more difficult and even today part of the basement renovation still remains incomplete.

Visible Industrial Charm

After the demolition work and completion of the load-bearing steel skeleton construction, the building was finished in just twelve months and in many places, you can still see the industrial charm of days gone by. For example, the old wooden windows were lovingly restored and the broken handmade bricks were reused for the window lintels as well as in the bar area. The use of burnished iron also makes the history of the industrial building that little bit more tangible.

The Hotel Speicher wants to show that tourism and ecology can go hand in hand and that sustainability can also be achieved in the upscale hotel industry. That with every ecological measure, the well-being of the guests can be increased and environmentally harmful emissions reduced. So, from your room you can not only enjoy the wonderful view of the Ziegelsee or the old town to the castle, but also live, sleep and relax in a climate-friendly environment.

By the way, since 2010 the Hotel Speicher has been completely climate-neutral and in 2017 it was even the first hotel in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to receive an award for being climate-friendly!
