What’s the weather like in Tenerife in the spring?

In a word: fantastic! Not too hot, not too cold. Spring is still considered low season, as most tourists travel between May and October. But if you want more out of your vacation than just swimming on a rocky beach, then spring is the time to go. (Especially if the winter was long, dark and uncomfortable again!)

• In March, April and May the maximum daytime temperature is around 23°C (73.4°F). There are no major weather fluctuations on the island, with sunshine almost all year round.
• The night temperature is around 17°C (62.6°F).
• The dark lava beach heats up in spring (without the risk of burning like in summer!) and the water temperature is a pleasant 20°C (68°F). So don’t forget your swimsuit!

Can I get to Tenerife without a plane?

Yes, you can. There are ferry connections from the Spanish mainland several times a week. However, it takes about 48 hours to get to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as the Spanish island is located off the West African coast.

If you’re flying, it’s best to take a direct flight. Every take-off and landing puts more pressure on the environment. Also, plan enough time for the trip. There is a lot to do and see!

Events and dates for spring 2025 in Tenerife

Carnival in Tenerife (February 23 to March 9, 2025)

Did you know that the carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the most famous in the world? Many would put it in second place – right after the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro!

From the end of February to the middle of March, the capital of Tenerife is a colorful hive of activity with dancing groups, drummers, colorful troupes and floats. The two main dates are:

• The election of the carnival queen (Wednesday, February 26, 2025): the participants show off their elaborate costumes (some of which weigh more than 100 kilograms).
• The great carnival parade (Tuesday, March 4, 2025): a parade with costumed dance groups and music.

Tenerife Blue Trail (March 27-29, 2025)

The Tenerife Blue Trail is a running event that includes different distances. In addition to the main disciplines, Ultra (102 km), Trail (66 km) and Marathon (42.2 km), there are numerous shorter distances for families, people with disabilities, etc. Held annually since 2011 in the south of Santa Cruz, the race has not only a spectacular setting, but also an inclusive concept.

Easter (April 17-20, 2025)

Easter processions take place in all the towns of Tenerife. They are organized by the brotherhoods and mainly take place  on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Corpus Christi Procession in Orotava (June 26, 2025)

Even more impressive than the Easter processions is the Corpus Christi procession in Orotava. (Yes, we are cheating: the date is already in summer.) Tenerife is the only place in the world where Corpus Christi is celebrated over two weekends, which makes the Orotava event unique.

The whole town becomes a work of art. Sand artists work for weeks on a sand painting in front of the Town Hall. The processional route itself is decorated with a flower carpet that is deliberately destroyed by the procession.

Spring hiking highlights in Tenerife

Spring, with its mild temperatures, is perfect for hiking. Here are some highlights:

Tajinaste Flower

In May (or between the end of April and June) the Tajinaste are in bloom – an impressive botanical spectacle that can only be seen in Tenerife! The red tajinaste, up to three meters high, is one of the many endemic plants of the island and grows in the Teide National Park. Its red flower heads are not only beautiful to look at, they are also important for the special Teide honey. And by the way, this honey makes a perfect (sustainable) holiday souvenir!

Teide National Park

The Teide National Park is a great place to hike in the spring anyway. You don’t need to rent a car to get there; there are two bus lines that will take you there. Once there, you can either take the cable car to the top of the impressive volcano of the same name, or climb it on foot.

Saltwater Pool

Although spring is not the main season for swimming, a hike can be combined with a refreshing dip. We recommend salt water pools. These are especially common in the north of the island, both as natural lava pools and as man-made seawater pools. Here you can swim in the Atlantic Ocean without having to worry about strong waves or rocks. The natural pools work perfectly without any technology or chemicals.
