Sustainable living – sounds good, but what comes to mind? Do you sometimes ask yourselves the same question? One of the points that is a bit tricky probably is the furnishings.

Our Green Pearls® partners have a lot of experience and also a few tips on what you can pay attention to at home (or in the office).

Sustainable refurbishment

The decisive factor is the careful selection of materials and service providers from a sustainable point of view, as well as the willingness to try out new things. This requires know-how, creativity and entrepreneurial courage, especially in a business context.

Before you buy new things, however, you should look at what you still have at home. Old wood can quickly be turned into an authentic bench, and old wooden crates can be a nice basis for a great coffee table. Sometimes, however, it does not need great craftsmanship, and it is done with a fresh coat of paint. Take a look and see if you might still have some true treasures in the basement.

No luck in the basement? Then look for used furniture. You can also find real gold pieces. Some of these still have to be prepared a bit, but then they can become the eye-catcher beyond comparison. A pleasant example of this is the old apothecary cabinet in the Creativhotel Luise. It used to be in a pharmacy in Coburg – now it’s an eye-catcher in the hotel. With new glass shelves and beautiful lighting, it now sets the scene for the hotel’s own products.

New Furniture

Sometimes, however, new furniture is needed. When buying new furniture, you should make sure that it can be returned to the cycle after use in accordance with the cradle-to-cradle concept – the Creativhotel Luise and the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA, for example, follow this principle. And what does that mean for you in concrete?

Work with natural materials like wood! Both indoors and outdoors. This is not only sustainable, but also inviting and warm. When choosing wood, make sure to use regional wood to avoid long transportation ways and the deforestation of protected areas.

You can follow this principle not only when furnishing, but also when renovating.

POU DE GLAÇ – ECO TOURISM

The POU DE GLAÇ – ECO TOURISM vacation homes, for example, were renovated in 2019 using only natural materials. Wood and natural stone were mainly used. This sets an interesting contrast to the processed steel and cement.

Support the locals

You can also support the local economy while renovating. Whether in the rural area around Okelmann’s or in a city like the location of the Green City Hotel Vauban carpenter’s craftsmen’s can be found easily.

At Okelmann’s, almost all the furniture comes from a carpentry shop in the neighboring town. And at Green City Hotel Vauban, too, everything from the wood furniture to the individually designed reception desk is sourced regionally and was predominantly implemented by local businesses.

Have fun with your next renovation!
