Threatened helpers
Many insects and especially many bee species are threatened by extinction in Germany. Yet they are hard-working and important helpers of nature and ensure a successful harvest. If you have a garden or even a small balcony, you can provide a little living space with bee-friendly flowers and a watering place.
Insects everywhere
Be inspired by the offers of our hotels. At the Creativhotel Luise there are many different places for insects such as the bee hotel, the flowering meadows, or watering spots. In 2019, the hotel was awarded for it as a “Blooming Business”. There are also creative ideas in the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA. There, the insects can even take advantage of “wellness offers”: There is a bee hotel, a nectar meadow, a butterfly buffet, and the so-called “Salamander SPA” as a watering point. Insects also feel at home at the organic and family hotel Gut Nisdorf on the Baltic Sea. There are 2 insect hotels there and one section of the property is a natural, wild meadow. The hotel’s two ponds are also the home of numerous dragonflies. The hotel has been awarded a garden award by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which certifies that the garden is especially close to nature.
The bee hotel
In the Hotel Rinner, bees are inseparable. The bees would definitely also feel at home in the hotel’s beautifully designed rooms, which feature the typical honeycomb shapes and lots of sunny yellow in the furnishings. But the bees have their own sanctuary: the hotel’s own apiary. The hotel uses the healing power of bees for its unique Api therapy. From around April, the soothing and valuable beehive air is back again. Since this year, the hotel also has new premises for the honey massage, where you can relax wonderfully.
A paradise for bee weddings
Actually, there are no bees on the North Sea island of Juist, because they do not tolerate the harsh climate in the winter well. However, Juist has a cultivation station, a so-called occupation station, from which virgin queen bees fly out with selected drones, the male bees. The queens fly out several times with the drones during their wedding flights and are fertilized in the process. The supply of fertilized sperm is then sufficient for the rest of their lives and thousands of young bees are born. Beekeepers from all over Germany send their bees on this approximately three-week honeymoon. Since there are no wild bees on Juist, a special species purity is guaranteed. The best time to take a look at the colorfully painted bee boxes near Café Wilhelmshöhe is in the evening when the wedding flights are over.
Old fruit varieties in Thuringia
A large meadow orchard with a total of 69 apple and pear trees has been planted on the grounds of the MANOAH vacation home complex. Among them are also various old apple varieties, such as “Kaiser Wilhelm” or “Lausitzer Nelkenapfel”. The trees are intended to protect and revive what has almost been forgotten. In addition to the old fruit tree varieties, you will find many benjes hedges (deadwood hedges that are naturally regenerated by seed flight), various flowers and flowering meadows, as well as bushes around the houses. This brings nature right to the front door and provides a healthy habitat for numerous insects.
