As part of our small series on Christmas traditions, we asked Silvia Rusmich from Bio Seehotel Zeulenroda and the MANOAH Houses about typical regional customs.
Christmas traditions: Vogtland “Neinerlaa”
A Christmas tradition originating in the Vogtland which revolves around food, is the “Neunerlei” or dialectal “Neinerlaa”. It is the typical Christmas meal on Christmas Eve and consists of nine dishes or their components, although these may vary regionally. The various ingredients for the Vogtland “Neunerlei” are spread over nine plates on Christmas Eve and served as individual courses, with each family having its own preparation method and tradition.
- bread – as the most important food it should not run out all year round.
- salt – its pungency drives away evil spirits.
- compote – sweetens life.
- millet porridge – stands for a lot of small money, sometimes you can find a coin in the porridge. Whoever spoons it shall become rich!
- nuts – stand for a good life.
- herring – means wealth (especially herring with roe). Instead of herring also carp or pork is served. This means luck in the coming year.
- dumplings – are symbolic of the big money in the house to be.
- sauerkraut – stands for not getting angry with life.
- stollen – is to illustrate the baby (Christ Child).
By the way, in the nearby Bio Seehotel Zeulenroda there is a snack tree at Christmas time with sweet and hearty treats from the in-house organic bakery and organic butchery. The Naschbaum, a decorated little fir tree, is placed in the reception area of the hotel every year at Christmas and every guest can nibble as much as he wants. There is also a gingerbread house – but only for viewing.
