Yoga is a very popular practice all over the world. Maybe you have already tried it. Are you looking for sustainable retreats and studios for your next vacation in Thailand? Find out more in this blog post.

So what is yoga actually?

Yoga is rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism. The philosophical teachings come from India and are over 5,000 years old. Did you know that Yoga means more than just physical exercises? Sustainable thinking and acting are an integral part of the teaching. Yoga was brought to Thailand by monks who recovered from hours of meditation through the exercises.

Later on, this led to the Thai-Yoga-Massage, which we have written about here

The yoga teaching

Yoga in ThailandMore than 2,000 years ago, the Indian scholar Patanjali wrote an 8-step plan on how people can experience complete peace and relaxation through yoga exercises. The scholar understood yoga as “a state in which the mind comes to peace”. Today, Yoga is still taught all over the world according to Patanjali’s teachings.

The first three stages of his teaching are particularly interesting:

The first level Yama is about rules in dealing with nature and other people. Niyama, the second level, gives instructions for dealing with yourself. Only the third level, Asana, describes the body exercises that we commonly call Yoga.

The first two levels of teaching stand for non-violence and contentment. If you live according to these principles, you will experience mindfulness in your daily life. By living according to these principles, you will be mindful of other people and act sustainably.
