Waste sorting with AI: What is it, and where is it used?

The idea is very simple. Using sensors, camera footage, and image recognition software, the AI tool can identify improperly sorted trash, or “mis-sorts,” and, in some cases, sort the trash itself.

The former is particularly helpful in waste recycling. For instance, the Austrian municipality of Krems employs an AI tool to evaluate organic waste and determine if it requires further sorting or can be sent directly to the compost pile — all within the garbage truck. This type of analysis is also useful for analyzing waste volume data, planning routes, developing awareness campaigns, and increasing efficiency.

Another application I’ve examined is self-sorting trash cans. As with the “Oscar Sort” example, they scan the trash you want to throw away and show you the correct bin. Alternatively, they can sort the waste themselves, as the Ameru bin does. These solutions solve the problem at its source, provided people follow the recommendations and the AI functions as intended.

 

 

Using AI for waste separation at home

If you’re thinking, “Great! I need one of those bins right away!” I’m afraid I have to disappoint you. Self-sorting trash bins, in particular, are currently too expensive for most households. They cost several thousand euros.

However, you can get started right away with AI-powered trash sorting via an app.

 

Apps for you at home

The EcoScan app is one of the few available in Germany, and I tested it for this article. With this app, you can either take a photo of your trash or scan the barcode. Both options worked well for me. However, location-specific recommendations are a premium feature.

Another app I’ll be keeping an eye on is the Wertis app. It’s a collaborative project between Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, dida Datenschmiede, GE-T GmbH, and the waste management company A+B Peine. It works on the same principle and is designed specifically for the German market.

 

However, aside from apps like these, I’m afraid to say that the future at home is still far off.
